Business School once again welcomes Bank of England

On 23 April the Business School welcomed Huw Pill, Chief Economist and Executive Director for Monetary Analysis and Research at the Bank of England, for a talk to students and staff.

In his speech titled “..of BEARs (Bank of England Agenda for Research) and Balance Sheets”, Huw discussed evidence on the Central Bank’s balance sheet and reflected on how targeted research can drive key policy debates, and where future research may be of particular value.

Huw also reiterated the Bank’s commitment to basing at least 500, or one in every 10, staff in Leeds by 2027 and commented: “We are very keen, reciprocally, to build a relationship with this university and others in the area, both to benefit from their knowledge, insight and research capacity… but also build a pipeline of the best students coming into our hub in Leeds and create a self-sustaining environment of real economic and policy excellence.”

Introducing Huw on the day was Deputy Dean, Professor Niall Hayes. Reflecting on the visit he said:

Engaging with industry leaders offers our students a valuable opportunity to deepen their understanding of the Bank of England's pivotal role and the broader dynamics of the UK economy, significantly enriching their educational experience. It was an honour to host the Bank of England once again and I look forward to collaborating in the future.

The event was coordinated by Dr Danilo Mascia and the team in the Business School’s Accounting and Finance Department and International Banking Institute (IBI), which plays a key role in working with regulators and industry on high quality research, helping to respond to the changing demands of the banking sector. He highlighted the importance of these touchpoints with leading institutions such as the Bank of England: "Hosting distinguished industry leaders like Huw Pill offers our students and postgraduate researchers an invaluable opportunity to gain firsthand insights into the workings of major institutions and emerging policy developments. It also reaffirms the School’s dedication to producing research that is not only academically rigorous but also deeply relevant and influential within the banking and financial sector.
