Research overview

WPART is a two-year research project conducted by Prof Virginie Perotin and Dr. Gabriel Burdin at Leeds University Business School and funded from the European Union's Seventh Framework Programme for research, technological development and demonstration (Marie Curie Intra-European Fellowship). 

The aim of the project is to provide evidence on the effects of worker participation on firm-level employment adjustments in response to changing market conditions in European countries, particularly during the Great Recession. The project addresses a pressing concern for European policymakers, industry, trade unions and citizens. Although there is a presumption that employee voice may improve both workers’ well-being and firm performance in several ways, credible quantitative evidence is still scarce.

Research team

Professor Virginie Pérotin is an international expert on the economics of employee participation. She has a dual academic and policy research background, having held research positions at the London School of Economics, in French government (at Centre d’Etude des Revenus et des Coûts–CERC) and at the International Labour Office (in Geneva) before taking up a chair in Economics at Leeds University Business School in 2001. She holds a PhD in Economics from Cornell University (USA). Prof Pérotin specialises in empirical research on employee participation using microdata at the firm and employee levels to support evidence-based policy and practice.

Gabriel Burdin is a Marie Curie Research Fellow at the Leeds University Business School. He is also Research Fellow at the Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA) and Assistant Professor at Instituto de Economia, FCEA, Universidad de la Republica, Uruguay. He completed his PhD at the University of Siena, Italy, in 2013. Gabriel’s research focuses on the economics of worker cooperatives and worker participation, organisational economics, and labour economics.
