Dr Emma Gritt

Profile

Emma is a Lecturer in Information Management and Programme Director for the BA Business Management programme. Emma completed her PhD at Leeds University Business School in 2018, exploring information behaviour and police use of social media. Her research is of an interdisciplinary nature working across Information Systems and Management. Emma has expertise in qualitative research methods exploring organisational adoption and use of digital technology, and how this influences work practices. Through her academic research and time spent within the Crime and Policing Analysis Unit at the Home Office, she has experience in providing policy guidance to national policy makers. 

Emma has co-led a Research England QR SPF research project exploring how police work practices changed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Previous to this, she has worked within the AIMTech Research Centre in Leeds University Business School on large national projects exploring policing, information and technology in the UK which results in an Impact Case for REF 2021. Emma was Co-I on an ESRC/UKRI project exploring Adapting Offices which explored hybrid work practices in a range of organisations and across sectors. She is currently Co-I on a British Academy Small Grants project exploring early career academics experiences in UK Business Schools. Prior to joining the university, Emma has previously worked as a research assistant at St Chads College, Durham University and Teesside University on a variety of private and public sector funded projects, including an evaluation of O2/Telefonica’s corporate social responsibility programme, Think Big.

Research interests

Emma’s research interests focus on the role of digital technologies in organisations. She is specifically interested in:

- How digital technologies influence work practices, including their adoption, use and resistance

- Digital transformation 

- The role of social media for information sharing and communication

- Responsible digital and ethical challenges of digital technologies

- Qualitative methdologies

- Socio-technical and practice based approaches

Student education

As well as her Programme Dirctor role, Emma leads and teaches on a range of modules at both undergraduate and postgraduate. Her teaching primarily focuses on topics such as the digital workplace, the management of information, social media, co-creation and collaboration, critical perspectives to technology, and digital skills for the workplace. Her pedagological approach blends theory and practice and is therefore both research informed and developed with industry leaders. Emma enjoys creating interactive learning environments which draw on industry talks, group projects and case studies.
