Leeds hosts Psychology of Climate Risk Communication workshop

On 8 September 2025, the Workshop on the Psychology of Climate Risk Communication was held at the University of Leeds.

Hosted by the Centre for Decision Research (Dr Irene Mussio and Professor Barbara Summers) and funded by the International Association for Economic Psychology (IAREP), the event brought together researchers and policymakers to explore how psychological and economic insights can improve climate-change communication.

As climate change uncertainties continue to rise, participants discussed why effective communication is more important than ever. The workshop examined validated and emerging approaches for crafting and delivering climate risk information to influence decision-making.
They keynote speaker, Professor Wändi Bruine de Bruin (University of Southern California) spoke about “Communicating the Climate Crisis”, including discussions about translating Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change research for the general population.

Attendees explored how to bridge the gap between behavioural research and real-world policy through the panel discussion, bringing together experts from academia and government (Sarah Taylor- Natural England, Joseph Daron- Met Office and University of Bristol and Susanne Lorenz- University of Leeds).
