Tell us about your degree - why did you choose it? What elements of the degree inspired you to study it?
I chose to study finance because of my aspiration to build a career in the industry and the course at the University of Leeds struck the perfect balance between foundational knowledge and opportunities for specialisation. In the earlier modules, we developed a solid understanding of financial principles, which laid the groundwork for the more advanced and specialised topics in later years. The depth and breadth of the curriculum was intellectually stimulating and aided my preparation for the professional world.
What was the best part of your studies here? What did you enjoy the most about your course?
The staff were a standout part of my experience. Starting university during the Coronavirus pandemic was challenging, especially when interactions were limited to virtual platforms. Despite this, the lecturers went above and beyond to create a supportive and engaging learning environment. By my final year, with in-person lectures resuming, I truly appreciated the opportunity to connect with my lecturers and departmental staff on a personal level. Their dedication and encouragement made all the difference in my learning journey.
What was your impression/experience of the student union, the city of Leeds and Yorkshire? Did you do any extracurricular activities during your studies? How did you enhance your personal development? What would you recommend to future students?
Living in Leeds was a fantastic experience. The city has a vibrant and welcoming atmosphere that’s perfect for students. Being passionate about pilates and yoga, I found a studio near the university where I could practice regularly, which became a cornerstone of my wellbeing.
My advice to future students is to embrace your individuality. Choose activities that resonate with you, rather than feeling pressured to participate in everything. Staying true to yourself not only enhances your personal development but also allows you to fully enjoy your university experience.
How did your experiences at Leeds University Business School help you to advance your career?
One of the most transformative aspects of my time at the Business School was my year abroad in Rome. Immersing myself in a new culture helped me develop confidence and adaptability, which translated directly into stronger performance during interviews. These experiences played a significant role in helping me secure my first internship at Millennium Capital Partners, followed by another internship the next summer at Goldman Sachs.
How has your career progressed since leaving the Business School? Have there been any notable highlights? After completing my degree, I successfully transitioned from my internship at Goldman Sachs into a full-time role in their Sales and Trading division. It’s been an incredible opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills I gained during my time at Leeds while continuing to learn and grow in a dynamic professional environment.
What are your ambitions for the future?
My primary goal is to continue progressing in my career and build a meaningful and impactful professional journey. Beyond work, I’m committed to ongoing personal growth, ensuring I maintain a balance between professional success and personal fulfilment. I also believe in staying open to life’s unexpected paths, as they often lead to the most rewarding opportunities.
What advice would you give to anyone looking to work in a similar role or industry to you?
My advice is to play to your strengths and seek out roles within the industry that align with your skillset and passions. When your abilities and interests match the role, it becomes much easier to present your authentic self during interviews and excel in the job. This alignment not only increases your chances of success but also lays the groundwork for a meaningful and fulfilling career.
What is your defining memory of studying here? Would you recommend the Business School to others?
The friendships I built at the Business School are a defining highlight of my time at Leeds. Being surrounded by like-minded peers who share similar aspirations is incredibly motivating. These friendships have not only helped me strive to be my best self but also created a strong foundation for my professional network.
I wholeheartedly recommend the Business School to anyone considering it. The combination of excellent academics, supportive staff, and a vibrant community makes it an ideal place to grow both personally and professionally.
What advice would you give to students to help them get the most out of their time in Leeds?
Start by finding your people- friends who share your values and will support you through your university journey. Equally important is ensuring you are on the right course for you, one that excites and challenges you. When these two elements are in place, your time in Leeds will be truly unforgettable, filled with growth, opportunity, and lasting memories.
