Bank policymaker delivers first speech in Leeds

A leading economist delivered the first speech in his new role for the Bank of England at the University of Leeds.

Professor Alan Taylor, an external member of the Bank’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), shared his outlook on inflation dynamics.

The Bank of England’s MPC is responsible for making decisions about the bank rate. External members are appointed to ensure that the MPC benefits from thinking and expertise from outside the Bank.

Professor Taylor, who was born in Wakefield, spoke about recent developments in the UK economy, the outlook for interest rates and future monetary policy. He explained how evidence from the past joined with economic theory can inform his views on the future and policymaking.

He added: “It’s a great pleasure to return home to Yorkshire and have this opportunity to speak at the University of Leeds today, helping to explain and take questions on the Bank’s work from future graduates and the wider community.”

It’s an honour that Professor Alan Taylor chose Leeds University Business School to deliver his first public speech since he joined the MPC last autumn.
