Tell us about your degree - why did you choose it? What elements of the degree inspired you to study it?
I chose Accounting and Finance because it aligned well with my A-Level subjects. After gaining work experience at a small accounting firm, I decided that this was the career path I wanted to pursue. To further deepen my understanding of the field, I decided to study it at University level.
What was the best part of your studies here? What did you enjoy the most about your course?
The highlight of my studies was the selection of modules I chose. These modules were incredibly interesting and kept me consistently engaged. The staff were also excellent, delivering the modules effectively and ensuring I had a strong understanding of the content. The Business School's facilities were impressive, providing numerous study spaces. However, the greatest part of my studies was undoubtedly the lifelong friendships I formed along the way.
What was your impression/experience of the student union, the city of Leeds and Yorkshire? Did you do any extracurricular activities during your studies? How did you enhance your personal development? What would you recommend to future students?
As a Leeds native, I was familiar with the city. This made it easy to make friends and explore both the city and the campus. The Student Union offered a wide range of societies, providing opportunities to meet new people and develop new skills. My advice to future students is to be open-minded, join different societies, and embrace new experiences.
How did your experiences at Leeds University Business School help you to advance your career?
My experience at Leeds University Business School significantly advanced my career. It provided me with invaluable insights into various professional accounting bodies, helping me identify the most suitable qualification to pursue in Accounting and Finance. Additionally, I gained a comprehensive understanding of the diverse range of companies operating in the UK and their offerings. This knowledge has enabled me to settle into my current role and effectively pursue the CIMA qualification.
How has your career progressed since leaving the Business School? Have there been any notable highlights?
I am currently working as a Finance Graduate at International Procurement and Logistics (IPL), in my first rotation and then will be doing two more rotations over the next two/three years. My degree enabled me to secure eight exemptions from the CIMA body, reducing my exam workload to just eight remaining exams. This significant advantage has streamlined my career progression by minimising the stress associated with balancing work and study commitments.
What are your ambitions for the future?
My future aspirations involve becoming an exam qualified CIMA accountant by 2026, followed by achieving time qualification in 2027. Subsequently, I aim to expand my professional network and potentially pursue career opportunities in another country to embrace a different culture and lifestyle.
What advice would you give to anyone looking to work in a similar role or industry to you?
Be open to anything, always pick up something new to learn. Dedicate time for your qualification if you are studying for one and network as much as you can and gain knowledge from those people. Embrace challenges, prioritise your work-life balance, and develop strong communication skills. Regularly seek feedback, stay updated with industry trends, and be patient and persistent.
What is your defining memory of studying here? Would you recommend the Business School to others?
My defining memory of studying at Leeds is the friendships I made. Leeds is such a diverse community with people ranging from all over the globe. I have made friends with people that have become my lifelong friends and regularly stay in contact with them even though they are halfway across the world.
What advice would you give to students to help them get the most out of their time in Leeds?
Have a clear study life balance. This is key as it will help you make the most out of your time in Leeds and will help you get your degree and the grade you want.
