Tell us about your degree - why did you choose it? What elements of the degree inspired you to study it?
Choosing to study BSc Business Economics was a decision driven by my passion for understanding economics at a micro-organisational level. The course offered a comprehensive range of modules that aligned perfectly with my career aspirations. The highly experienced tutors and the robust support system throughout my four years were significant factors in my decision and the faculty's expertise and dedication were instrumental in deepening my understanding of business economics.
What truly inspired me to pursue this degree were the opportunities for personal and professional growth that extended beyond the classroom. The University of Leeds provided an environment where I could thrive academically and develop essential life skills and the University's commitment to student success ensured I had the resources and guidance needed to excel.
The University of Leeds offered more than just an academic degree. It provided a platform to build my overall personality and develop key competencies essential for the professional world. The freedom to explore various interests and the support to pursue them were invaluable.
My course offered me unparalleled opportunities to grow academically and professionally. The experiences and skills I gained have been key in shaping my career and personal development.
What was the best part of your studies here? What did you enjoy the most about your course?
The best part of my course was undoubtedly the helpfulness and friendliness of the tutors and staff. As an international student away from home for the first time on a different continent, their support was invaluable. They were extremely kind and always willing to help, even outside of academic settings. Their approachability made a significant difference to my experience and the dedicated office hours were particularly beneficial. They provided a space where I could clarify all my pending questions and doubts from the classroom, ensuring I fully understood the material.
Staff were also incredibly supportive with career advice. They guided me on what steps to take to secure placements and graduate roles and their advice was indispensable in helping me reach my current position.
The Business School provided a nurturing and supportive environment that went beyond the academic. The kindness and dedication of the tutors and staff were the highlights of my experience, making my time at Leeds truly memorable and impactful.
What was your impression/experience of the student union, the city of Leeds and Yorkshire? Did you do any extracurricular activities during your studies? How did you enhance your personal development? What would you recommend to future students?
Leeds is truly the perfect student city. With most of the population around campus, Hyde Park, and Leeds city centre being students, it quickly became a home away from home. The sense of community was immense, and it made my transition as an international student much smoother.
The Leeds University Union (LUU) offered a plethora of extracurricular opportunities that significantly enriched my experience. During my time, I was extremely active in various societies and roles including Cultural Activities Executive and President of the Indian Society.
As the Cultural Activities Executive, I was responsible for allocating and granting financial funds to cultural societies which enhanced my financial acumen and decision-making skills. As President of the Indian Society I organised events for over 400 students, including managing venues, catering, funding, budgeting, and leading a team of 12 members, provided me with invaluable leadership skills.
These roles gave me practical experience in managing large-scale events, which was a highlight in all my graduate interviews. The skills I developed through these extracurricular activities, such as financial management, leadership, and organisational abilities, were frequently mentioned and appreciated by potential employers.
How has your career progressed since leaving the Business School? Have there been any notable highlights? The skills I gathered at university, such as financial acumen, leadership, and organisational abilities, have been instrumental in climbing the corporate ladder. The practical experience and exposure I gained through various roles at the Leeds University Union and my academic studies have been invaluable in my professional journey.
What advice would you give to students to help them get the most out of their time in Leeds?
Get involved – Take advantage of the numerous extracurricular opportunities offered by the Leeds University Union. It’s a fantastic way to develop skills, make friends, and enhance your university experience.
Explore the city – Leeds is vibrant and full of life. Explore the city and Yorkshire to fully appreciate the culture and beauty of the area.
Utilise Support Systems: Make the most of the support systems available, including office hours and career advice from tutors. Their guidance can be incredibly beneficial for your academic and professional journey.
My time at the University of Leeds was profoundly shaped by the supportive community, the vibrant student life, and the extensive extracurricular opportunities.
