Tell us about your degree - why did you choose it? What elements of the degree inspired you to study it?
My father was an HR specialist, specifically Learning and Development. Part of the reason why I chose to study HRM was because of him. I was inspired by him, hearing and seeing his day-to day made me believe it could be a great career for me. Another reason was the fact that I didn't know what options I had, so I literally searched "extroverted person job recommendation" and HR was on the list. After doing extensive research on degree course modules, I believed it would be very suitable for me. I was particularly interested in the CIPD pathway, which I knew it'd be very beneficial to my HR career in the UK.
What was the best part of your studies here? What did you enjoy the most about your course?
All the professors I encountered at the Business School were very approachable and supportive. The CIPD pathway was definitely one of the major things I love about the degree, which isn't offered at every School.
What was your impression/experience of the student union, the city of Leeds and Yorkshire? Did you do any extracurricular activities during your studies? How did you enhance your personal development? What would you recommend to future students?
I loved that the Student Union organise so many events for student to participate in. It's an amazing opportunity to get to know more people, particularly from different majors. The location of Leeds is also perfect for travel. You can hop on a train and it takes you almost anywhere within 3 hours. One of the events I participated in was ‘language corner’ at the cafe in the Student Union building. It was an amazing opportunity to meet people from all over the world, to learn their languages, their cultures, and to make friends. My advice for future students is to participate as many activities as you can while you're here. It's a big decision and a privilege to pursue a degree abroad, so make it count!
How did your experiences at Leeds University Business School help you to advance your career?
When I was working on my dissertation project, my research methods included interviewing working professionals, so my professor very kindly introduced some alumni and connections to me to help with my project. They became my network after the project and kindly provided a lot of suggestions and market insights on the UK job market, which later helped with my own job search here.
How has your career progressed since leaving the Business School? Have there been any notable highlights?
I landed my first role as a recruiter in the insanely competitive London market and secured my first promotion 10 months into the role.
What are your ambitions for the future?
I would love to run my own business one day, although I haven't decided in what sector. Luckily, my job gives me the perfect opportunity to be in a great position to understand what's trending. I would also like to continue advising and inspiring students and young professionals with my personal experience to help with any career-related matters.
What advice would you give to anyone looking to work in a similar role or industry to you?
Do as much research as possible to truly understand what the role and industry you're interested in is about. Build connections with as many people as you can by reaching out to professionals on LinkedIn or attending networking events. Last but not least, be authentic, genuine, and confident.
How was the transition to living and studying in a different country? Did the university offer support or services that you found helpful?
My transition was smooth as this was not my first time studying abroad. However, the University of Leeds provided a lot of support to international students which I found extremely helpful and thoughtful, from picking me and other students up from Manchester airport to offering cookware sets upon my arrival to save the hassle and stress of buying them myself.
What would you say is your defining memory of studying here? Would you recommend the Business School to others?
Definitely friendships! Countless days and (late) nights studying together at Laidlaw and Edward Boyle libraries. We still talk about the good old days and always make a stop at the libraries whenever me and my friends are back in Leeds!
I would 100% recommend the Business School to others. The prime geographic location to travel and experience different cultures, the supportive staff, the perfect city to study because there are so many things to do but more affordable and less distracting, compared to other big cities.
What advice would you give to students to help them get the most out of their time in Leeds?
Whether your future plan is to stay in this country or go back to your home country, use as many resources as possible provided by the School (e.g. social activities, career centre, course representatives, etc.). Make as many connections/friends as possible. Your time in Leeds might be temporary, but the memories, the friendships and the strong connections you made, will stay with you forever.
