Tell us about your degree - why did you choose it? What elements of the degree inspired you to study it?
I chose to pursue a degree in MA Advertising and Marketing because it allowed me to combine my creativity with the analytical side of problem-solving. The course provided an ideal balance of practical and theoretical knowledge, enabling me to develop a well-rounded understanding of the field.
My passion has always been in social media marketing, and the program offered modules that deepened my knowledge and skills in this area, including Consumer Behaviour, Market Research, and Social Media Marketing, etc. This degree not only honed my creative abilities but also equipped me with the tools to analyse and measure the impact of marketing campaigns effectively.
What was the best part of your studies here? What did you enjoy the most about your course?
The best part of my studies was the amazing peers I had the opportunity to meet. They came from all walks of life, with different ages and backgrounds, which gave me a chance to learn so much from their experiences and perspectives. The faculty was equally fantastic- very approachable and supportive. Coming from India, where there’s often a clear hierarchy between professors and students that can feel intimidating, I found it refreshing to be in an environment where everyone was welcoming, and I could talk to anyone freely.
I also really enjoyed the course content and the unique structure of the seminars. The smaller group settings allowed for open and engaging discussions with both peers and professors, creating a collaborative learning environment that I truly appreciated.
What was your impression/experience of the student union, the city of Leeds and Yorkshire? Did you do any extracurricular activities during your studies? How did you enhance your personal development? What would you recommend to future students?
During my time in Leeds, I made it a priority to engage in activities that helped me stay stress-free and balanced. I was a member of The Edge (Leeds University’s Sports Centre), where I regularly went to the gym and swimming- not just for physical wellbeing, but also for emotional and mental health. The University offered a wide range of societies to choose from, catering to all sorts of interests and I joined the Feminist Society, Fashion Society, and Dance Society, which were not only enjoyable but also a fantastic way to socialise and meet like-minded people.
Leeds is a beautiful city with so much to explore, and it’s surrounded by other great destinations perfect for day trips and hikes with friends. I loved taking short trips to places like the Lake District, Scarborough, and York, especially during Christmas when the festive atmosphere was magical.
For future students, I’d recommend getting involved in extracurricular activities and exploring the city and its surroundings. These experiences not only help with personal growth but also make your time at university truly memorable.
How did your experiences at Leeds University Business School help you to advance your career?
My experience greatly advanced my career by providing both academic insights and practical opportunities. From the start of my programme, I was determined to gain hands-on experience alongside my studies. With the support of Joblink, I secured a part-time role as a Social Media Assistant at a digital agency. This experience was invaluable as it allowed me to directly apply what I was learning in my coursework to real-world scenarios.
Working while studying helped me develop a deeper understanding of key concepts and equipped me with practical skills that have been essential in my career progression. The combination of academic knowledge and professional experience gave me a strong foundation to succeed in the field of marketing.
How has your career progressed since leaving the Business School? Have there been any notable highlights?
Before graduating, I secured a role at Cyjax, a threat intelligence company, and transitioned to a full-time position as a Marketing Assistant shortly after completing my degree. In November 2024, I celebrated my one-year work anniversary, and I am expecting a promotion by February 2025.
Working at Cyjax has been an incredible experience, especially as it’s my first role outside of India. It’s been exciting to collaborate with colleagues from diverse backgrounds and adapt to a new professional culture. The role has allowed me to apply my skills in marketing while also expanding my expertise in areas such as threat intelligence and content strategy. This journey has been both challenging and rewarding, setting a solid foundation for my future career growth!
What are your ambitions for the future?
My ambition for the future is to work in a marketing agency where I can learn how to manage multiple clients, acquire new business, and further develop my skills in a dynamic environment. I aim to gain experience that will allow me to build a strong understanding of client relations and marketing strategies on a broader scale.
Ultimately, my main goal is to start my own business that isn’t confined by location. I want to create a global brand that caters to marketing, working with companies across the UK, India, the USA, and beyond. I envision a company that brings innovative marketing solutions to clients worldwide!
What advice would you give to anyone looking to work in a similar role or industry to you?
Try everything you can. Only by exploring different aspects of marketing will you truly understand what you're passionate about and where your strengths lie. Don't fear judgment- creativity often involves being bold, weird, and loud, so it's okay if you stand out or get some curious looks. Lastly, always be open to constructive criticism. It’s a valuable tool for growth and improvement, helping you refine your skills and approach as you progress in the industry.
How was the transition to living and studying in a different country? Did the university offer support or services that you found helpful? Can you offer any advice?
The transition to living and studying in a different country was made much easier with the support offered by the University. They organised numerous events and global cafes where I could meet people who were just as nervous as I was about settling into a new environment. The classes were also very diverse, so I always found someone with a similar background or interest. It was exciting to learn about different cultures and perspectives from my peers. The UK is a beautiful country, which added to the overall experience!
My advice to future international students would be to take advantage of these events and support services, as they’re a great way to make connections and feel more at home. Embrace the diversity and be open to new experiences- it’s a rewarding journey.
What would you say is your defining memory of studying here? Would you recommend the Business School to others?
I have so many memories from my time at the Business School that when I think about it, a montage of moments runs through my mind. I remember going to classes, then heading to the LUU (Leeds University Union) to chill with friends in between, attending seminars, and finishing the day at the gym. To some, it might seem like a routine, but for me, it was living my dream. The balance of academics, socialising, and personal growth made every day meaningful.
I would absolutely recommend the Business School to others. It offers a perfect blend of support, diverse experiences, and opportunities that help shape both your career and personal life.
What advice would you give to students to help them get the most out of their time in Leeds?
Make the most of every opportunity, both inside and outside the classroom. Engage with your studies fully, but don’t forget to explore the city and its surroundings. There’s so much to see and do in Leeds, from vibrant social events to beautiful parks and nearby hiking spots. Get involved in societies and clubs, as they’re a great way to meet people and learn new things. Take time for self-care, whether that’s through fitness, hobbies, or simply exploring the local culture. Most importantly, embrace the diversity of your peers and enjoy the experience- Leeds is a place where you can grow both academically and personally.
