Video: Integrating emotional support into the debt advice process

Being in debt can be an emotional process, meaning support for those in debt should not only look to provide practical financial management advice but also provide the tools to help those in debt develop emotional resiliency.

In this video blog, Dr Simon McNair summarises the findings of his three-year Leverhulme Early Career Research Fellowship. Simon worked in partnership with Citizens Advice in Leeds and Bradford to develop the Money Worries booklet. This booklet aims to teach people simple and effective psychological coping skills in areas such as stress management, self-efficacy, and emotional control in an attempt to mitigate the kinds of psychological barriers that may otherwise undermine the effectiveness of other, practical financial guidance people receive from debt advisors.
