1. HR Director, Airfix Plastics

My role was to build up the HR function as their first HR Director. I arrived after a long strike for Trade Union recognition, and I worked with the Managing Director on the recognition of TGWU. We drew up an agreement and held regular Union-Management meetings. While in post I received training part-time in HR at the University of Westminster. I put in place a range of essential HR procedures and practices, including training schemes.

• I analysed and put in remedies for a wide range of problems in the workplace. For example: exceptionally high labour turnover, especially from the shop floor, poor production statistics due to faulty work ( "moulding scrap" was instant dismissal).
• I instituted an “open door policy” to my office on the shop floor
• Designed and instituted a training scheme for the injection moulders
• Instituted a meal break for those on 8 -hour shifts
• carried out post -employment interviews and acted on the information
• Put in a Health and Safety Union- Management Committee
• Carried out regular H and S inspections
• Worked to repair racial tensions between differing ethnic groups of employees and management

2. HR Director: Arts Council of Great Britain

My work involved setting up an HR Department and improving conditions in a quasi-government organisation where Civil Service terms and conditions were often inappropriately imposed. I organised the major HR procedures and operations. I supervised and advised on all staffing matters for the Hayward Gallery, and the Wigmore Hall which at that time came within ACGB structure. I then returned to Higher Education and completed an MA in Industrial Relations and HRM at LSE.

3. Senior Lecturer, South Bank University and City University Business School

I began teaching immediately afterwards at South Bank University .I specialised in Industrial/Employment relations (global and local), I also taught Organisation theory, organisation studies and HRM at both undergraduate and post-graduate levels. I took voluntary redundancy when South Bank offered mass redundancies due to debts owed by the University.

4. Teaching Fellow, Leeds University Business School

My present post is teaching in the Division of Leeds University Business School. I have taught on all the topics on the MA main HRM option. I currently teach on the MA HRM Employment Law option.

5. Lay member, London Central Employment Tribunal

Throughout my teaching career I served for 17 years as a lay member on the Employment Tribunals, often on long cases and over a wide range of employment law cases. We received training throughout. I have since advised on and taken cases to Tribunal for employers and employees.

6. Consultancy and Training

I carry out consultancy work for individuals and companies. For example, I have recently completed several assignments for a well-known Theatrical Agency. This has involved:

• Training in HR for an agent who has now taken over the role for the Company
• Advice on matters of Unfair Dismissal
• Advice on Performance Management
• Advice on setting up HR procedures
• Writing the Company Handbook

7. Management Training

I am experienced in Management Training, designing my own programmes and have specialised in:

• Appraisal and Performance Management
• Leadership
