Professor Marina Papanastassiou


Marina Papanastassiou is Professor of International Business at the Department of International Business  and at  the Centre for International Business University of Leeds (CIBUL).  She held previously appointments at Middlesex University, London, at Copenhagen Business School, Denmark and at the Athens University of Economics and Business, Greece.She has published in Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of World BusinessManagement International Review, Research PolicyR&D Management, and International Business Review. She co-authored (with Robert Pearce) two books on “The strategic development of Multinationals; subsidiaries and innovation”, London: Palgrave MacMillan (2009) and on “Multinationals, Technology and National Competitiveness”, London: Edward Elgar Press (1999) whilst she edited with Emeritus Professor George Mergos a book on “Food Security and Sustainability: Investment and Financing along Agro-Food Chains”, London: Palgrave MacMillan (2017).   She has co-edited special issues for Management International Review, Transnational Corporations and Critical Perspectives on International Business.  She is a member of the editorial review board of the Journal of International Business Studies and a Fellow of the European International Business Academy (EIBA).

Marina has held visiting and other positions in a number of academic institutions globally including the University of Reading, Department of Economics, UK; Bifrost University, Iceland; Zayed University, Abu Dhabi, UAE; Abu Dhabi University, UAE; University of Paris I, La Sorbonne, TEAM, Paris, France; College of Management, Israel and the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece.

Marina has served in leadership positions in a number of academic institutions and organisations. Between 1999- 2006, she was a member of the EIBA  board whilst in 2002 she served as President of EIBA and chaired in 2002 the 28th Annual EIBA Conference in Athens, Greece, becoming the first female president of  EIBA. Since  October 2020 she is a member of the Academic Advisory Board, of ICBS Business College, Athens and between 2015-2016 she was Head of the Department of International Management and Innovation at Middlesex University.  She has organized, chaired and/or participated  in panels for a number of   EIBA and Academy of International Business (AIB) Doctoral Consortia.

Research interests

Marina’s research interests include the global innovation strategies in multinationals (MNEs) and their network of overseas subsidiaries and R&D laboratories;  the decision making process in MNEs and in particular the dynamics between HQs and subsidiaries; global value chains and the role of MNEs in SDGs such as  food security; impact of foreign direct investment (FDI) on growth and developement; the internationalisation of start ups and the role of incubators in local systems of innovation. Furthermore, she interested in multidisciplinary topics such as cultural heritage and its impact on local development or ageism in the workplace.
