Dr Peter Phelps

Profile

Dr Peter Phelps is an Associate Professor in the Department of Economics at the University of Leeds. He holds a PhD from Cambridge University, where his research focused on regional economic and monetary integration in Europe. Previously he taught and supervised students at Cambridge University both at the departmental level, as well as for various colleges. He obtained his BSc from the University of Warwick; later he studied at Cardiff University -- graduating top of the class with Distinction -- before commencing study at the London School of Economics (LSE) for his Master’s, graduating with Distinction and winning the prize for the best MSc research dissertation. 


Dr Phelps has an interest in applied and policy-relevant research at global and regional levels having previously conducted research at the International Monetary Fund, in Washington D.C.; at the Asian Development Bank’s Office for Regional Economic Integration (OREI), in Manila; and at the Economics consultancy firm Volterra Consulting, in London. He has produced reports for international research institutes and published in major journals across the social sciences, which reflects his interest in interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary research, including Applied Economics, Journal of International Financial Markets, Institutions and Money, Review of Development Finance, Environment and Planning A: Economy and Space, Journal of Common Market StudiesDevelopment and Change, amongst others. He has served as a reviewer for numerous journals, including Economic Modelling, Econometrics, Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization, Journal of International Money and Finance, International Review of Financial Analysis, Journal of Common Market Studies, Empirical Economics, Economic Systems, amongst others. Research conducted by Dr Phelps and co-authors has been cited by leading international institutions, such as the World Bank (WB), International Monetary Fund (IMF), Bank for International Settlements (BIS), Asian Development Bank (ADB), and Overseas Development Institute (ODI). He has also acted as an invited academic expert for leading international organisations including the United Nations (UN). 


Formerly a Visiting Scholar at Cambridge University and most recently a Visiting Fellow at Wolfson College, Cambridge, Dr Phelps is an Associate Member of the Cambridge Centre for Economic and Public Policy (CCEPP), and a Life Member of Queens’ College, Cambridge.
