Economics researchers contribute evidence to House of Lords inquiry on UK–India trade agreement

Professor Kausik Chaudhuri, Professor Muhammad Ali Nasir and Xinxin Wei, have provided written evidence to the House of Lords International Agreements Committee.

This formed part of the Committee’s inquiry into the “Scrutiny of international agreements: UK–India Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement”. The evidence was published on 3 February 2026 in the Committee’s 14th Report of Session 2024–26 (HL Paper 253).

The researchers submitted an empirical assessment of the likely economic effects of the proposed UK–India agreement. Their submission identified which sectors may benefit most, where adjustment pressures are likely to emerge, and why the timing and practical implementation of tariff changes will shape real economic outcomes.

The contribution addresses a key gap in the policy debate, where discussion of the agreement often remains high‑level and lacks accessible quantitative analysis. By translating complex provisions into clear, evidence‑based insights, their work supports more effective scrutiny and a more informed public and parliamentary conversation.

The evidence aims to assist the Committee and wider stakeholders in understanding the distributional impacts of the agreement and in identifying priority areas for implementation. This can help guide more targeted recommendations and ensure that future policy responses are better prepared and grounded in robust analysis.
