Managing the Unmanageable: Lessons from the Business of Football

On 18 February the Business School welcomed COO of Nottingham Forest, Paul Tyrell, as part of the International Executive Speaker Series.

This dynamic programme of guest speakers offers students a unique opportunity to learn firsthand from senior executives operating at the highest strategic levels of business.

Paul delivered his talk titled Managing the Unmanageable: Lessons from the Business of Football, with Senior Teaching Fellow, Rebecca Padgett, facilitating.

Paul has over 20 years of experience in top-tier UK football, holding senior executive roles at Manchester City, Aston Villa, Liverpool, Everton, Rangers, and Nottingham Forest. His expertise spans club operations, communications, and corporate affairs, handling managerial changes, ownership transitions, and supporter relations. He also has a strong background in TV and public relations, having led press and external affairs at ITV and BBC North.

Paul commented:

Participating in the International Executive Speaker Series was an enriching experience for me as a speaker, giving me the opportunity to engage with such a dynamic and inquisitive group of students. I believe that these interactions are mutually beneficial, fostering a deeper understanding and inspiring future leaders.

With over 150 attendees, the popular talk sparked a lively debate. Students engaged enthusiastically, posing thought-provoking questions on topics such as sponsorship considerations, business forecasting, self-fulfillment, and managing internal conflicts.
