Experience
My current role is to support the acceleration of innovation projects in a major initiative to commercialise new technologies in regenerative medicine (http://www.medical-technologies.co.uk/). This involves critically evaluating (in real-time) the management of innovation within individual projects and the programme as a whole, and feeding back the findings of this research to the project teams concerned.
Innovation has been a consistent thread throughout my professional life. Having received a thorough grounding in the art of chemistry research, most of my career has involved roles in and around the fine chemicals industry. Initially this involved research role and this was followed by more significant periods of time in manufacturing. In amongst this industrial experience was a period of two years working for Yorkshire Forward (the Regional Development Agency) as we sought to develop support programmes for both the chemicals and biosciences sectors. More recently, starting my own consultancy company brought me in contact with Universities’ “Knowledge Transfer” activities and a whole series of innovation projects at the University of Leeds.
Particular innovation highlights from my professional work would be as follows:
- a member of the original team at James Robinson Ltd that developed their award-winning range of photochromic dyes
- a member of the team at Hickson and Welch that won the environmental innovation award of the Royal Society of Chemical Engineers for the development of new manufacturing processes for an established range of optical brighteners
- Working with industry Steering Groups and Yorkshire Forward to create innovation support programmes in both the chemicals and biosciences sectors
- Supporting operations teams at Innospec Inc both in Europe and the USA to implement manufacturing excellence programmes

Research
Member of the C-TIE Research Group
My research interests are broadly in the management of emerging technologies, and I’m working on two research projects at the moment.
The first is part of a major new initiative to commercialise new technologies in the area of regenerative medicine (http://www.ikcrtd.leeds.ac.uk/). I’m studying the innovation praxis within these projects with a view to identifying those activities that enable innovation processes to be accelerated.
The second is a study exploring the implications for management of emerging technologies that result from policy mandates for "Responsible Innovation". In this regard I'm a member of an international research collaboration (http://cns.asu.edu/stir/) led from the Center for Nanotechnology in Society at ASU.
In addition, I’m interested in the relationship between research conducted in business schools and the influence this has (or might have) on actual management practice. This interest informs my own work (for example in the regenerative medicine project above) and also involves projects to support management researchers wishing to improve their engagement with users of such research.
