Experience
Lectured and tutored in both Oxford University and Oxford Polytechnic, and from 1982 to 1985 was a Junior Research Fellow at Balliol College, Oxford. Between 1976 and 1984 Malcolm carried out extensive periods of fieldwork in the Celtic areas of Europe, particularly the Scottish Highlands and Islands and Brittany. His research concerned the social and economic life of bilingual areas (English/Gaelic and French/Breton); he made a particular study of the Breton fishing industry, and of a fishing community in south-west Finistere. From 1990 to 1992 he was ESRC Teaching Fellow at the Management Centre in Bradford, moving on to work on an ESRC funded project ("The Management of Cooperative Strategies", studying managerial understanding of corporate boundaries in the pharmaceutical industry) from 1992 onwards. In 1993 he was appointed Lecturer in Marketing at Bradford. He joined CIBUL in January 1996 and was promoted to Senior Lecturer in International Business in 1998.
Research
Research interests at the moment are: cultural issues in management; anthropological concepts as applied to consumer behaviour; anthropological analysis of corporate life; anthropology and transaction cost economics; the pharmaceutical industry. France in general is a central object of comparative interest; Malcolm spent four years there between 1978 and 1984 and speaks fluent French. He currently spends some energy interpreting business studies to anthropologists, and anthropology to students of business, and this looks set to continue. He worked as consultant for research development on a British Government aid project in Poland from 1996 to 1999, helping to develop regional centres of business education. He has research interests, both from his own activities and through the supervision of doctoral students, in Poland, Bahrain, China, and various European countries.
