Research

Broadly, my interests are in the areas of scientific creativity and innovation. My current research focuses on promoting creativity in highly multidisciplinary scientific research groups in both industrial and academic contexts. Much of this work has focused on understanding multidisciplinary scientific creativity as a multilevel sense-making process spanning individual, group and organisational levels. A current primary focus in terms of impact is the development of a scientific creativity training course which will be applicable across all scientific and technical disciplines. This course will not only aim to foster creativity in multidisciplinary scientific research environments but provide an understanding of how creative efforts dovetail with current innovation strategies in scientific research. Closely linked with this, I also have active research interests in the areas of bioenterprise in multidisciplinary scientific research and, more generally, entrepreneurship.

I am also interested in bringing together the social and natural sciences in terms of interdisciplinarity in teaching, training and supervision; particularly at doctoral level. A current focus is the integration and modification of primarily qualitative social science techniques and tools into doctoral level scientific research. This is with an aim to help scientists develop cross-disciplinary meaning and understanding in highly multidisciplinary projects. For example, I am engaged in providing NVivo training for research and within this have an interest in providing training on how NVivo can be used to good effect for complex literature reviews in multidisciplinary scientific research projects.
