Experience
Dr Allen has been a lecturer in the Department of Information Studies at Sheffield University and a lecturer in the Information Systems Research Centre at Salford University. He has performed a number of administrative roles including Director of MSc Programmes in Information Systems and Information Management. He has wide experience as an external examiner of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in the field of information systems. He is an active member of academic and practitioner communities. In the last year he presented papers at IFIP 8.2 in Boise USA, EUNIS in Porto Portugal (for which he won Best Paper Prize), and ISIC 2002 (Lisbon Portugal). In the last month he has delivered invited papers at the Police Federation Tetra/ Airwaves Conference (Birmingham England), and the UCISA MISG Conference (Dunblane Scotland). Dr Allen is a founder member of the UKAIS Northern Group and a founder member of the Research Network for Mobile Interaction & Pervasive Social Devices.
Research
Dr Allen’s research deals with information systems and their implications for work and organization, particularly at the strategic level. He also has an interest in the current discourse about the socio-philosophical foundations of information systems and information management. David is currently working on two funded research projects, on information overload in the financial and telecommunications sectors and on the informational and organizational issues surrounding the evolution of distributed information architectures in large complex organizations. He has recently completed two projects on the informational and organizational impact of mobile computing in UK police forces.
