Before entering academic life, Dr Murray gained wide managerial and business experience through careers in both the public and private sectors. Having undertaken an undergraduate degree in his forties, he then embarked on a PhD study focusing on the role of social information in capital markets. His first appointment was as a lecturer in accounting at Sheffield University Management School, but his area of interest widened slightly as Corporate Responsibility emerged as an increasing focus for business. To further this interest, he founded the British Academy of Management Special Interest Group in CSR, in 2007, and went on to organise a number of conferences to support the growing number of researchers and teachers in the CSR and sustainability field, and in 2008, published Corporate Responsibility: A Critical Introduction, with Michael Blowfield which quickly established itself as the leading textbook in the area. A 2nd Edition was published in 2011, which was recently awarded the Chartered Management Institute’s ‘Management Book of the Year 2011-12’ in the Leadership and Management Textbook category.
In 2006 Dr Murray was part of the United Nations Taskforce which developed the Principles of Responsible Management Education (see: unprme.org), and is still part of one of the working groups.
In 2007 he collaborated on an ESRC Seminar Series bid and between 2008 and 2010, drew together leading academics, consultants and business leaders to debate the most pressing issues in CSR, drawing delegates and contributions from around the world. Corporate Social Responsibility: A Research Handbook, edited with Professor Kathryn Haynes of Newcastle University Business School, and Professor Jesse Dillard of Portland State University, will be published by Routledge later this year, and includes a number of papers from the series.
These activities have helped establish an international reputation in this field, and he is regularly called on to deliver lectures and seminars on related topics.
Since coming to Leeds University Business School in 2010, he has been working under the remit of embedding sustainability into the wider curriculum and has created a number of modules at undergraduate, postgraduate and MBA level. He is currently building an exciting new Executive MBA Programme, in collaboration with The Ellen Macarthur Foundation, and the Centre For Low Carbon Futures, focusing on The Circular Economy, which is due to commence in 2013, and will publish a textbook and a separate book of readings to support the programme.
In the field of executive education, Dr Murray was involved in the development of the highly successful Goldman Sachs ‘10,000 Small Businesses Programme’ which is now recruiting its 4th Leeds based cohort, and he is presently in partnership with the Yorkshire based NGO, CO2Sense, to develop a programme designed to meet the challenges being presented by sustainable development and climate change. This programme will commence in September 2012.
Dr Murray is currently Head of the Management Division at LUBS, a division of 53 academic staff.
He is presently completing a MEd at Sheffield University, and in his spare time enjoys travelling to and from work!
