How did you hear about the Business School and why did you choose to study here?
During my last year of undergraduate study back in India, I first learned about Leeds University Business School. It stood out to me for several reasons, including its impressive rankings and its reputation as a supportive and dynamic institution.

Tell us about your course - why did you choose it? What elements of the course inspired you to study here?
The UK stands as one of the largest communication hubs globally, with a vibrant and diverse market. I was drawn to working in such a powerful and changing sector. The course integrated marketing, PR, and corporate communications – three very core areas in the field of communications – into one unified programme. By studying this integrated approach at Leeds, I knew I would acquire a holistic skill set that would enable me to navigate the complex landscape of modern communication effectively.

Furthermore, the Business School’s high reputation, esteemed faculty and experience in these areas reinforced my selection. The chance to learn from outstanding academics with industry experience and profound knowledge was priceless. I was certain that their advice and insights would enrich my academic path and provide me with the practical skills needed to succeed in the competitive sector of corporate communications, marketing, and PR.

What is the best part of your studies? What are you enjoying the most?
My favourite part of studying has been meeting people from diverse cultures and networking with business leaders. I have interacted with international students, creating a varied and inclusive learning atmosphere. These connections have expanded my horizons, strengthened my cultural awareness, and enhanced my education.

Moreover, my roles as Masters Student Ambassador and Student Fundraiser have been immensely fulfilling. I have proudly represented LUBS at campus tours, student panels, and online conversations. I love sharing my student experience to show potential students the many options here. As a Student Fundraiser and Caller, I've enjoyed connecting with our great alumni. Building relationships and sharing interesting events and publications has been really enjoyable.

What are your career aspirations? Do you think the experience and skills you will gain on your course will help you in your future career plans? In what way?
I am dedicated to adding value to the dynamic and evolving communications sector and aim to use my expertise to drive innovation, foster meaningful connections, and shape the future of corporate communications, marketing, and public relations.

The course's module structure provides a balanced and thoughtful approach to communications strategy and practice, and my teamwork, communication, and employability skills improved through extracurricular activities.

One aspect that particularly excites me is the course's links with industry. The guest lectures provide unique insights into industry advancements. I can keep up-to-date with industry developments and best practice thanks to these practitioners' perspectives and real-world experiences. Exposure to industry professionals enhances my understanding and helps me make key industry connections. In fact, it was through these connections that I secured an internship as part of the Leeds Internship Programme, which further enriched my learning journey and provided me with practical exposure in my desired field.

I am confident that the combination of theoretical knowledge, practical skills, and industry insights gained through my course will equip me with a competitive edge in pursuing a successful career. I am prepared to contribute effectively and make a meaningful impact.

Do you have any noteworthy achievements from your study at the Business School that you can tell us about?
One of the highlights was my performance in the 'Global Strategic Marketing' module, where I received an outstanding grade and received highly positive feedback from my instructors. This exhibited my strategic marketing knowledge and ability to apply it in real-world situations.

Another notable achievement was securing a highly competitive summer internship in the field of digital marketing. This opportunity allowed me to apply the knowledge and skills I gained from my studies to a real-world setting, further enhancing my understanding of the industry. It's a step towards understanding the UK's communications industry at large, and I am excited to see how it goes.

Additionally, being a Student Fundraiser and Caller, I am proud to share that our collective efforts resulted in successfully raising over £150,100, a testament to the strong support and dedication of our university community. Securing two part-time roles within the university was a proud moment for me, as it not only provided me with valuable work experience but also allowed me to actively contribute to the university community that I hold dear.

If you are not from the UK, how was the transition to a foreign country? Did the University offer support or services that you found helpful? Can you offer any advice?
As an international student, the transition to a foreign country was initially accompanied by a mix of excitement and apprehension. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the extensive support and services offered by the University to facilitate a smooth adjustment. From the moment I landed in Leeds, it was evident that the university had thoughtfully catered to the needs of international students.

The University provided comprehensive support, including assistance with transportation from the airport to my accommodation, ensuring a safe and comfortable arrival. Additionally, they offered practical resources such as meal prep for the first week, which alleviated the stress of settling in and allowed me to focus on acclimating to my new environment.

Additionally, the Careers Service provided invaluable guidance in tailoring my CV and adapting it to the specific requirements of the UK industry. The online service guide and one-to-one meetings with career advisors helped me understand the job market and develop a strong application strategy. Thanks to the resources and support provided by the University, I was able to effectively showcase my skills and experiences, ultimately landing an internship as part of the Leeds Internship Programme.

My advice to incoming international students is to embrace the experience wholeheartedly and not to worry. Remember that you are not alone in this journey. The University and its support services are there to assist you every step of the way. Be proactive in seeking help when needed, whether it's for academic support, cultural adjustment, or personal challenges. The university staff and fellow students are welcoming and understanding, and they will be more than willing to lend a helping hand.

What is your impression/experience of the facilities, the staff, your peers, the student union, the City of Leeds and the Yorkshire region?

The student union has a diverse selection of activities, clubs, and societies to accommodate different interests and hobbies. There’s always something going on, which makes campus life 10x more fun!

Leeds City and the Yorkshire region provide a culturally diverse experience. Leeds is a lively city with a flourishing arts and music scene, diverse culinary options, and various recreational activities. The region is renowned for its beautiful countryside, historical landmarks, and scenic landscapes. I have found exploring the city and its surrounding areas to be a highly enriching experience, as it has allowed me to discover new places, traditions, and experiences.

Beyond my studies, I have thoroughly enjoyed participating in various extracurricular activities and groups offered by the University. These activities have allowed me to explore my interests, develop new skills, and engage with like-minded individuals.

A particularly noteworthy aspect is the recognition of Leeds as the "2023 Year of Culture." This year-long celebration of arts and culture has been a remarkable experience. It has allowed me to witness a diverse range of cultural events, exhibitions, and performances, showcasing the city's artistic talent and creativity. Participating in the Leeds 2023 Year of Culture has provided me with a deeper understanding of the city's cultural landscape and has been a fantastic opportunity to engage with the local community.
