Dr Miguel Rodrigues Matos Torres

Profile

Miguel holds a PhD in Economics.Miguel Torres is a Marie Skodowska-Curie Research Fellow at the University of Leeds, UK. He has more than twelve years of experience as a researcher in international business and public incentives, first as a consultant of Portuguese agencies in African and Southern American countries (e.g., Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde, and Mozambique) developing several transnational projects, then as a full-time PhD student and as a lecturer at the Faculty of Economics in University of Aveiro, Portugal. He earned his PhD degree in 2013.

His main topic of research has been public incentives towards outward internationalization, including the behavioural processes of firms internationalization as well as longer term public policy implications. In 2012, he visited for a semester the Department of International Business at Uppsala University (Sweden). In 2013 and 2014, he visited for two months the Department of International Business, Strategy and Economics at KU Leuven (Belgium).

In 2013, he visited for three months the Leeds University Business School (UK). In 2014, he visited for a month the Department of Industrial Management at the Polytechnic of Milan (Italy).

Miguel also collaborated (since 2004) with Portuguese local institutions, including several Chambers of Commerce (e.g., Chamber of Commerce of Centro and Industrial Portuguese Association) providing policy making advice regarding their international competitiveness. A major output of this collaboration is the (direct or indirect) participation in a number of private and European co-financed transnational projects and promotion of Portuguese businesses in several European, American and African markets. Miguel's academic work, includes lecturing and researching. Since 2008, Miguel has taught International Economics, International Business, Industrial Organization and International Corporate Finance.

The research work has been recognised with several awards, including the Best Dissertation Proposal at the COST Doctoral Think Tank (Doctoral Symposium) of the European Business Academy (EIBA) in 2011 or his nomination as a finalist for the prestigious Buckley and Casson Dissertation Award of the Academy of International Business (AIB) in 2014. This work is being published in the International Business Review, the Journal of Business Ethics, the Multinational Business Review, the Academy of International Business Insights among other top-tier journals.

Miguel also have several book chapters in collections published by Palgrave and Elsevier and a co-edited Book available on Amazon (Death Firms: Causes and Effects of Cross-Border Corporate Insolvency) with Virginia Cathro and Maria-Alejandra Gonzalez Perez. Miguel was an invited speaker during the UNCTAD, World Investment Forum 2014 and a panel member on the 4th and 5th EIBA Doctoral Symposium, 2015 (Brasil) and 2016 (Austria), and a Track Co-Chair (International Business Policy) at the Annual Meeting of the AIB, 2017 (Dubai).Miguel Torres researches public incentives intended to stimulate internationalization and the international regulation of financially distressed companies, e.g., cross-border insolvency. He has an extensive field work, which has been presented as an active member of Academy of International Business (AIB) and European International Business Academy (EIBA).

Miguel was appointed session discussant (Political Risk, External Threats, and Firm Strategies) at the 73rd Annual Meeting of the AOM (2013), August 9-13, 2013 (Lake Buena Vista, FL, USA). He an invited speaker during the UNCTAD, World Investment Forum 2014, a panel member on the 4th and 5th EIBA Doctoral Symposium, 2015 (Brazil) and 2016 (Austria), a Special Panel Member SME internationalization - the role of public policy in stimulating international entrepreneurship at the AIB 2016 Annual Meeting (New Orleans,  LA, USA), a Special Panel Member SMEs Internationalization, Public Policies & Growth at the 43rd AIB UK & Ireland,  2016 Annual  Meeting (University  of London,  UK), and a Track Co-Chair (International Business Policy) at the Annual Meeting of the AIB, 2017 (Dubai). Miguel is also a regular ad hoc reviewer in several peer reviewed journals since 2010, including the International Review of Applied Economics, Journal of Asian Business Studies, Journal of Management Studies, Journal of World Business, Journal of Business, Economics & Management; and conferences since 2010, including the Southern  Management Association  & Strategic Management Society,  Academy  of Management, Academy  of International  Business and European International Business Association.
