He joined Robson Rhodes, Chartered Accountants, in Leeds and qualified as an Associate of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) in 1968, becoming a Fellow in 1973.

He joined Tilling Construction Services Limited in 1970 as a Divisional Accountant, later becoming Group Accountant. He qualified as a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA).

Peter served on the Board for the Accreditation of Accountancy Educational Courses (which was responsible for awarding professional exemptions to universities) and chaired its committee responsible for Scotland and Ireland.
