PhD/MPhil
- Candidates should hold a British Masters degree, or equivalent qualification in an appropriate academic discipline, with a minimum average score of 60 per cent.
- All candidates must meet our standard English language requirements.
MA by Research
- Candidates with a good Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification (for UK students this is usually an upper second or first class honours degree) can apply for the MA by Research.

+3/1+3 Scheme
As an ESRC-recognised department, UK and EU applicants can apply for ESRC (Economic and Social Research Council) funding. Scholarships are available as +3 funding (PhD study only) or 1+3 funding (Masters and PhD funding). See our funding and scholarships pages for more information.
Standard English Requirements
On all research degree programmes a pass in an approved test in English is required for applicants whose first language is not English. The approved tests and minimum required scores are below. (Please note that tests are valid for 2 years from date of test)
- IELTS. Scores of at least 6.0 or more in each section and an overall score of 7.0 are required.
- TOEFL. Scores of at least 600 overall and 5.0 in the Test of Written English are required.
- TOEFL iBT. We require an overall test result of 100 with the following minimum scores required in each of these sections: Listening 22, Reading 24, Speaking 24, Writing 25.
For split-site students, the following English Language requirements apply.
- IELTS. Scores of at least 6.5 or more in each section and an overall score of 7.0 are required.
- TOEFL. Scores of at least 600 overall and 5.0 in the Test of Written English are required.

The above are new English Language requirements introduced November 2009. Applications received on or after 1st November 2009 will be subject to the new English Language requirements detailed above. Applications received prior to this date will still be considered under the old requirements.
