Rolls-Royce’s excellence in design and engineering is known throughout the world, and it is at the forefront of ability to innovate and utilise the latest developments in engineering and design. This progressive outlook is reflected in Rolls-Royce’s work with the Socio-Technical Centre (STC).
A ‘socio-technical’ approach – where technical expertise is aligned with knowledge of human behaviour – has been adopted by Rolls-Royce to improve many aspects of its work, including: knowledge management, product cost engineering, the use of new tools and capabilities, work organisation, supplier development and business culture.
The work with Rolls-Royce, led by Professor Chris Clegg and co-authored by Mark Robinson, has led to improvements in the way new products are designed in the group’s Civil Aerospace division; its supply chain involving 200 suppliers; and in its global engineering operations which employs 13,500 staff and which designs, manufactures and distributes power systems.
