Training and developing the workforce is essential for a nation’s competitiveness, yet successive British governments have grappled with delivering major improvement.
Professor Mark Stuart has tackled this issue by analysing whether training and development could be improved through better dialogue between the workforce and management. This work, undertaken through the Centre for Employment Relations, Innovation and Change (CERIC), has shown that dialogue between workers and managers can deliver improved understanding between those designing and those receiving training and development programmes, and boost workplace performance.
This research, part-funded by trade unions, has contributed directly and indirectly to shaping policy, leading to further funding targeted at changes in support by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS). The results have been widely utilised and have improved performance in learning and training in many workplace scenarios.
