Full-time postgraduate researchers must complete the compulsory 45 credits below by the end of their first year of study. Part-time postgraduate researchers must complete the compulsory 45 credits by the end of their second year of study. Exemptions from some of the modules may be granted dependent upon prior research training.
Year One
Nature and Philosophy of Social Science Research (15 credits)
There is a confusing array of possible methods of research both within and across the social sciences. They raise many questions. Is objectivity and truth achievable in social science (or even in natural science)? Should the methods of natural and social science be the same? What is the relation between qualitative and quantitative methods? What philosophical perspectives can support inter-disciplinary research? What philosophical perspectives can justify mixed methods research? How and why do disciplines differ in the social sciences? What are the social influences on, and functions of, social science?
Drawing on the philosophy of social science literature but taking the practical standpoint of the social science researcher, this module will explore attempts to find answers to some of these questions.
Econometrics (15 credits)
This module gives postgraduate researchers a background in the statistical methods of econometrics and in the way these methods are applied in empirical economics. The module overviews and develops the essential econometric techniques used in applied economics. The module should put you in a position to use econometric methods intelligently and with an understanding of their possibilities and limitations. You will develop a knowledge and understanding of fundamental econometric concepts and techniques and their application to the modelling of economic and financial data.
