Frequestly Asked Questions

Can I apply online?

Once I have submitted an application how soon will I hear my decision?

We will contact you shortly after receipt of you application to arrange an interview, provided we have all the required supporting documents. On completion of your interview a letter will be sent to you confirming our decision.

Can I start the programme in January?

No. We only have one intake per programme per year, which is September for the Full-time MBA and October for the Executive MBA.

However, if you are an international student and would like to begin your preparations for your MBA earlier than September, you could apply for the Language Centre’s Academic English for Business and Management programme (AEBM). This programme would help you develop your linguistic and academic skills, and enable you to adjust to life and study in Leeds. The AEBM runs from January to September.

Are there any exceptions to the required minimum work experience?

No. The MBA is a post experience programme and applicants must possess a minimum of 3 years post-graduation relevant work experience for the Full-time MBA and 5 years for the Executive MBA before they can apply.

I have studied in English for many years. Do I still need to take IELTS or TOEFL?

Yes. Everyone whose first language is not English is required to take one of the IELTS or TOEFL tests.

Can I substitute an English qualification for an english course In The UK?

No, you will need an English language qualification such as IELTS or TOEFL. In order to meet the UKBA’s visa requirements, you will need to take a Secure English Language Test before you can apply for a UK visa. To satisfy the UKBA, you will need to score at least B2 or higher, before you can begin your degree at the University. However, if you score lower than B2, you may be eligible to apply for a pre-sessional English language programme.

If you have met the UKBA requirements, but still have not met the University’s English language requirements, you could be given an offer based on successful completion of the AEBM.

You can find more information on our language courses here.

If I only achieve 6 in the IELTS test, will I be able to take a language course instead of retaking the IELTS?

Yes. If you have a score lower than the LUBS requirement, you could be given an offer based on successful completion of the Language Centre’s Academic English for Business and Management programme (AEBM). The length of the course that you will have to do will depend on the score you have already achieved on the IELTS test. If you have an overall score of 6.0 or 6.5  on IELTS, but with only 5.5 in two components, you could be given an offer based on successful completion of the 10 week AEBM. There is an option of an April or July start for this. If your overall score is 6.0 or 6.5, but with one component of 5.5, you could be given an offer based on the successful completion of the 6 week AEBM. This starts in August. However, if  the score of 5.5 is in Reading or Writing, you will still be offered the 10 week option.

You will not need to take the IELTS test again, but you will have to successfully complete the AEBM. Successful completion means reaching a level of language equivalent to the LUBS entry requirement and achieving a satisfactory score for the academic elements of the programme. If you are Chinese, and would like to do your pre-sessional programme in China, the Language Centre runs a Pre-Masters programme in Shanghai for 10 weeks for conditional offer holders. For unconditional offer holders, a shorter option of 5 weeks is available.

Can I apply for the programme before I have my IELTS or TOEFL result?

Yes. We welcome applications prior to taking one of these tests. If you meet all other requirements you will be given a conditional offer. However you must meet the IELTS or TOEFL requirements before we can admit you onto the programme.

Can I contact current students and alumni to discuss the MBA programme with them?

Do you require an application fee?
