The power of data analytics: getting value for your business

In most, if not all industries, there are considerable opportunities to use data analytics in redefining competitive offers, re-configuring processes and even developing whole new business models. Insight driven decisions can have both immediate and long term effects upon business profits and competitive position.

However, there is confusion around the concepts and value of data analytics. What is it? What benefits are there to be had? What are the key principles of effective data analytics? What skills do we need? When business analytics technology providers make contact with me, how can I sound knowledgeable?

What is it?

This is a one day programme. The day will allow delegates to explore opportunities for the development of an enhanced analytical capability in their organisations to support both internal processes (strategic planning, financial, HR, operational logistics) and external processes (supplier, customers).

Who should attend?

This course is for senior managers who have responsibility to achieve new value, process improvements or general efficiencies within their organisation. In particular it will appeal to those who recognise the importance of data analytics but are still trying to come to terms with exactly what it means for their organisation.

This one day course comprises of four sessions, each lasting 1.5 hours. Sessions will be delivered through a combination of presentations, activities and discussions.

This workshop is delivered by Bill Gerrard - Professor of Business and Sports Analytics.

Bill has worked with a number of elite sports teams around the world. In recent times he has acted as technical analyst for sports teams around the world. In recent times he has acted as technical analyst for Saracens in the Aviva Premiership (rugby union) as well as providing statistical analysis to support the Sky Sports coverage of Super League (rugby league). He has also worked with Billy Beane, the General Manager of the Oakland Athletics in Major League Baseball, whose application of sports analytics has been the subject of the Hollywood film and best-selling book, Moneyball.

Bill's principal research focus is sports analytics defined as the statistical analysis of performance data within an evidence-based coaching regime in both individual and team sports to support decisions on talent identification, player recruitment, athletic development, training priorities, team selection, game tactics and injury management. He has published academic papers on player valuation, managerial efficiency, the sporting and financial performance of football clubs, and the relationship between wage costs and sporting performance.
