Timing
- The placement should start in the summer (between mid-June and mid-September)
- It can be advertised at any time, but between October and May is best
- The earlier you advertise, the greater the number of students to select from
- Please ensure that deadlines for applications and interview dates do not conflict with university examinations. There is a 2 week examination period in January and a 3 week period in May/June. Term and examination dates
Vacancy Details
- The placement should be a minimum of 9 months long and ideally 12 months
- It is advisable to have a clear job description
- It is important for students to have a role with a reasonable amount of responsibility or one that uses their skills
- It is a requirement that students have a named supervisor during their placement
- The salary is a matter for negotiation between the company and the student (but as a guideline many companies offer salaries of around £12-15,000)
- The job title is really important. Students search by general headings such as Marketing, HR or Finance. If your vacancy is given an unusual or lengthy title, which nobody would search for, it is likely to attract few applicants
- It is best to specify a closing date
The University Careers Centre, advertises vacancies via an online database. Employers can upload vacancies directly or email them to the Careers Centre. They can also be emailed to the Work Placement Programme Manager at the Business School. We cannot advertise a vacancy without a company address, a named contact person and telephone and email contact details, so if you do email vacancies please ensure you provide these.
