Experience

My doctoral work was concerned with the application of statistical decision theory to the modelling of wage bargaining. Some early empirical work done in connection with this doctorate led to my collaboration with Roy Church resulting in our 1998 book Strikes and Solidarity: Coalfield Conflict in Britain, 1889-1966.

As a result of an invitation from colleagues in the Centre for Development Studies I moved into another field, the economics of famine and food security and, later, the political economy of conflict. This has involved research, fieldwork and consultancy in Mongolia, Eritrea and Liberia for organizations including the Department for International Development (DfID) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and remains a key element in my teaching work.

My research work has now returned to the history of the UK coal industry. I am a member of the Royal Historical Society and am currently an Honorary Research Fellow at the Department of History, Yr Adran Hanes, Swansea University, Prifysgol Abertawe, Wales, UK, Cymru DU.  My most recent project is a chapter on the ‘Featherstone Massacre’ for a book on secular martyrology in Britain and Ireland co-edited by Keith Laybourn and myself, due to be published by Palgrave in 2017 or 2018.
