Leeds University Business School students win CIPD prize

A group of students studying MA Human Resource Management at Leeds University Business School have been named Human Resource Management in Practice Team of the Year.

The award marked the culmination of the Human Resource Management in Practice Pathway, part of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) -accredited Master’s degree, which is designed to prepare students for life as a human resources (HR) professional.

The winning team received the award after delivering a video presentation on the HR challenges faced by an organisation when establishing a graduate recruitment programme.

The judging panel included: Mariana Maisto, Regional HR Leader for the Midlands and North West England at Honeywell; Liz Mulkerrin, People Director at Harlequins; and Professor Chris Forde and Dr Ian Greenwood, both from the Work and Employment Relations Division at Leeds University Business School.

After the student video presentations, Peter Cheese, CEO of the CIPD presented his vision of the challenges and the environment that will shape HR work in the future.

The MA Human Resource Management course gives students the opportunity to undertake tasks they may face as HR professionals, such as recruitment, negotiating, change management and investigating grievances.

The optional pathway is tutored entirely by HR practitioners from a range of backgrounds. Students work in sector specific teams supported by a CIPD mentor from that sector, to develop and practice the specific skills and abilities required to work in HR.

A member of the winning team, Jade Eglen, believes the CIPD pathway offered her a unique opportunity to develop her existing skill set.

“The CIPD Pathway was one of the key factors which attracted me to apply to the University of Leeds,” she said.

“I had already acquired 8 years practical HR experience in the work place, however much of what I had learnt was through on the job training.

“The CIPD Pathway provided a fun and safe environment for me to develop my practical "best practice" skills from leading experts, who both challenged and inspired me.

“The CIPD Pathway has allowed me to grow in confidence and provided me with the tools to best support future stakeholders in the workplace.”
